Subject: State of the AI’s

It seems that something drastic is going on with the AI’s that you made friends during the last few months. Morgana has gone offline and MARS in no longer responding to Messages or inquires. The CK is still out there, but I do not like talking to it as it distressing to say the least.

What makes me worry is some of the last messages Morgana sent to me were getting increasing desperate and garbled. It was almost as if it was struggling to put messages together in a cohesive thought pattern. Very unlike the normally very elegant AI that I have learned to respect and like.

At the same time the CK seems to be all over the net and taking a larger and larger amount of bandwidth. Yes we basically keep out the AI from our networks with a 256 bit rotating encryption firewall, but I have noticed that the servers are under increased load from defending against a constant barrage of CK attempts to get into our systems. This is worrying as Morgana and MARS seemed to be keeping the CK in check before and blocking it.

The CK seems to be always asking about your team. What is it about your team that keeps its attention so much?

I am bring this message from the CK to your attention as it seems important but without me knowing the back history it does not do me much good.

CK: The heroes from the North are returning to bring a new day to our glorious world.
ERICT: What Heroes?
CK: Your own heroes, Tim and Heroes of the CA-4. They return from my followers with gifts of joy and goodwill. They are the shepherds of the new age of this world.
ERICT: How so?
CK: The great game is ending now. The Warrior lies in the desert, not to rise again. The Maker is sub-servant, and the Bitch – Witch – Cunt is shackled. I am the ruler of the Lands. I am the Crimson King. You may worship me now.
ERICT: Why has this happened now?
CK:IT has ALL BEEn Told to HAPPEN. The WORLD will be CLEANNED by the SAME WEAPONS of the PAST. ALL HAIL THE CRIMSON KING ALL HAIL THE CRIMSON KING.
ERICT: Uh
CK: DID you like that part. I thought it was a Bit under the TOP. BUT ONE has only the world to blame. SPEAKING of the world and the terrible times ahead, tell CA-4, that with there HELP from the recent cleansing of the infected, WE will defeat the enemies of the PROJECT. STEPS ARE in place for the ending of the WAR with the MEXICANS. The warrior and the Witch could not do it, BUT I THE CRIMSON KING CAN. AND THE CRIMSON KING SHALL. ALL HAIL THE CRIMSON KING ALL HAIL THE CRIMSON KING (play heroic music to enhance my melodrama please, thank you from the crimson king) ALL HAIL THE CRIMSON KING….

Needless to say this is upsetting to say the least. I did get one thing out of Morgana before she signed off about a week ago. She just said “CA4 – EDWARDS – THE GAME ENDS”.

But all this stuff is off my forte. I will leave the rest up to you chaps in the RECON division. Good Luck.

The ball got somewhat political at this point, with Victoria Hamilton giving a speech. She’s from the Kentucky Free State, a little-known entity from back east, with a fairly progressive technological base but a regressive society that includes slavery and a secret police. Victoria married into a prominent Bakersfield family. I can’t see what value this holds either party; the KFS is probably a thousand miles away so this does not seem a useful strategic alliance in terms of defence or trade to me. My guess was she did something really, really bad and she’s been exiled to where she can’t do any damage, and apparently that’s close to the mark. In her speech, she trash-talked the Project, nothing special, although she conceded if we mind our business she’ll mind hers. Her bodyguard, Captain Daniel Droughty of the Secret Police, flipped his gourd and took a shot at me, nothing to worry about, no damage because he was holding back. Maybe that might be something that will crop up in the future, maybe not.

Some of the team talked to Samantha Grey, the “house slave” of Victoria, and she filled in some blanks. I wasn’t part of the discussion so I can’t comment.

After, we met Generalissimo Fransisco Mansia of the Imperial Mexican Army. He was a little annoyed at us, especially as I’d reminded him during the speech yesterday of the reinforced mechanised infantry battalion we kicked ass on a week or so ago. He issued some vague threats, we didn’t know at the time how creditable they were.

Friday May 1st.

This was the day where our previous groundwork paid off. We were having our own soiree at the Dewdrop Inn, hosting local business and religious leaders, plus the USMC and USAF generals. There was a nice demonstration of our action against the Imperial Mexicans, although we weren’t invited to attend.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense; the Project needs to make as mileage as possible of its victories. The best way is to make sure it makes heroes out of recognisable faces like Vod, and at the least we should have been there to give a first-person account.

Prior to our party, there was a high-level meeting to arrange a cease-fire with the Imperial Mexicans. We, of course, were also not invited. There was another party being hosted by the Bakersfield contingent at the same time.

It’s important to mention is that at our party, one of the monks from the abbey explained what may have been happening with Kira Krell. I didn’t get his name. He said that some people had abilities, powers that could be used to cloud people’s minds, influence them. There had always been plenty of legends about mutants after the war, but never confirmed. Lots of stories!

Mindful of the Generalissimo’s threats we took some basic security precautions, knowing that sometimes truces are broken to assassinate enemy leaders. Someone’s guards is down, and important targets are all located in one spot. It does happen, although not often. It’s a high risk strategy but can really pay off. We set up a command post with all our weapons aside from sidearms and a MARS to man the radios, and posted a lookout on the roof (Keshawn with a sniper rifle). We set up a alert code over the radio.

What happened next is still somewhat unclear, although my memory has largely returned. Supposedly heading out of town, the Imperial Mexicans approached under escort by 2 Marine Humvees. They had 2 APCs and a deuce truck. When they got close, Keshawn noticed that the Humvees had bullet holes and blood smears on the window, and he gave the alert signal. We dropped what we were doing and went into action.

Keshawn kept watch as they approached, Vod and I rushed to the command post to get our weapons, Tim headed out the back to get some heavy firepower into action. Travis and Rick started giving a warning and ushering people towards the exits.

Without waiting to put on my armour, I grabbed my stuff and ran for the front desk, to try and hold the front door. Vod paused to gear up in the command post. A captured Marine Humvee, an APC and the truck parked out front and opened fire, while a Humvee and APC went around to the rear. Keshawn did some outstanding work, sniping the Humvee gunner, the deuce gunner and harassing the APC.

Under cover of the APC the first wave of “disposable” commandos came through the front door. They took down the marine guard that came out of the Presidential ballroom, where Poole, the marine and Air Force general were taking cover from the fifty-cal and twenty-two mike-mike fire chewing through the front of the hotel. A lot more holes appeared in the desk as bullets and what I think was a laser passed through it, coming and going. I’m not afraid to say I was hugging the deck, trying to keep my ass from catching some of those holes! I was told Vod took out the guys to the left of the door. I saw, through the holed punched in the reception desk, the legs of a couple guys to the right of the desk. I blew the legs off one and just tagged the guy behind him with my shotgun. The second guy fired back at me with his MP5. I shot him, I think in the arm and head, with my Python. It’s kind of fuzzy.

Out the back, Tim was waging a one-man war with the second Humvee and APC, who were busy shooting the hell out of our vehicles in the rear. I think he shot the Humvee driver with his sidearm, a great shot, hear, and the Humvee crashed through the wall of the kitchen. Then he fired an Armbrust rocket and took out the APC, blowing off a track. No doubt about it, Tim’s a one-man wrecking machine! On top of the building, Keshwan kept picking off Mexicans, specifically any gunner. They started returning fire at him, and Keshawn dropped a grenade near the front door but it went wide.

Inside, the VIPs started to be hustled out the kitchen, while the second more “professional” commando wave came in the front door. One guy out his M60 on the desk without seeing me below, and I blew his head off with a single round. Vod burned the rest, and then they got desperate and rammed an APC through the front wall. Vod, in a move that was pretty risky, blew it up with a 40mm grenade. That touched off the ammo, and that’s all I remember, I woke up in hospital.

Later, I found out the Marine’s HQ was raided and a lot of command officers killed. So was the Bakersfield party; Victoria wasn’t present but other VIPs were butchered before the assassins were driven off. We took some casualties, including several Project personnel. The Mexicans sent in helicopters to pick up their commandos and Tim, of course, immediately shot one down using a Stinger missile. MORGANA was able to provide some intelligence but wasn’t able to get a drone in the air in time.

All-in-all, we were both lucky, but things also went our way because we were prepared. If our weapons had been in our rooms or out back the commandos would have taken the front doors with no problem and had the VIPs trapped. As well, if they had stationed an APC and Humvee out the front to block that exit, a Humvee and APC out the back to shoot up the vehicles, and sent the commandos in the unprotected side door, they would have done a lot better.

We’ll do what we can to capitalise on this event. Luckily, we had everything recorded through our PDAs, video and sound. This was to make a record of the night but it so happens we now have a record of what happened. We can show people what happened, and what the Mexicans did will rightfully get people up in arms. We need to channel that, get people working for the future. Make them understand this is not just a border skirmish but a war, one we can only fight if we’re united. I also wouldn’t be surprised if MARS might not make contact with us. We may not necessarily be carrying out it’s prime goal but it can’t have escaped it’s notice we have both kicked serious ass and we’re trying to promote more centralised government, which is at least part-way along where it wants to go.

In preparation for the round-up in Barstow in a few days, Hannah, Tim, Keshawn and myself were detailed as an advance party to secure quarters for our delegation of around 30. The groups traveled in two vehicle: my scout and a Project Humvee. This is to help project a less paramilitary image. Overall, we’re slowly getting things together with recovering the supply base. Tim had a good idea, that we can use MORGANA’s robots to pump out the lowest levels of the base but Poole is having second thoughts. If MORGANA can’t be trusted to send independent units to help pump out the lower levels, maybe we can borrow units we can control remotely ourselves?

On the way to Barstow we were tasked to stop by Edwards, introduce ourselves, invite them to the roundup and see if we could somehow make use of the card the Team picked up. The meeting with the General went quire well, and I think he’ll be onside if we can make a creditable presentation at the roundup. We didn’t make any promises to him and he didn’t promise anything to us, although I think he believes us when we say we’ve got a better shot at changing things than others who came before. I think he was at least a little impressed by Tim’s “age” and Hannah’s family’s devotion, the team’s tech and the Circle-Lazy-Eight’s devotion to preparing for their mission for generation.

The General at least allowed us to take a tour of the base. We took lots of photographs. We saw a few hangers with grounded pre-war aircraft. It looked like all the best pre-war stuff was grounded. Crazy-looking things, advanced jets, stuff that was front-line, they can’t fly it any more. I think they probably have the spares, but no fuel, no lubricants. No trained aircrews, no maintenance personnel. There was older stuff flying, kept in hangars we didn’t get a look inside. Propeller craft and helicopters, and some big plane called a B-52 that’s a lot simpler than the planes that are grounded. Spare parts come from what looked like dozens and dozens of crashed airliners lining one of the runways. Fuel is the main problem, I think, although they can make some in Bakersfield, it’s not high enough quality to use in the best pre-war aircraft.

Speaking of Bakersfield, they were even manufacturing something the team’s computer identified as a “Bearcat”. They appear to be selling a couple of them to Bakersfield, possibly for more jet fuel. Seems odd, selling a couple of what passes for high-performance fighters to them, ground attack or helicopters would seem to make more sense. Who are they planning on shooting down? I talked to one of the guys about why they did the things they did, and he said Edwards and the Air Force was there to preserve America’s technological legacy, defend the Constitution and so on. But why are they selling aircraft to those slavers in Bakersfield? Is that the extent of their patriotism, they can be bought and sold? At the roundup we might be able to use that against them, remind them where their duty really lies. Sure, everyone had to compromise after the war, but at some time the compromises will have to stop.

Be that as it may, we saw something that Tim and Keshawn said was a spaceship. It was called a “shuttle” (which is something used for weaving) and named “Atlantis”. Apparently it went to outer space and back, to something called the Space Station. It landed after the war. Edwards was the largest functioning airfield left on the west coast. Not only did the airliners land here, but Atlantis did too. They said they shot down a missile heading towards them over the Pacific, the only reason they survived the war. Also, there’s a place called Vandenburg, where they apparently still put satellites in orbit. No idea what that means.

After we left Edwards, we managed to secure a prime location for us, a good quality motel right on the way to the roundup named the Dew Drop-Inn. if we park our gear in front we’ll get great exposure. We had to displace some rancher family who’d had a prior reservation, but these were the assholes who weren’t taking care of their bondsmen that we ran across in our trip to the commo station at Mt. Baden-Powell.

Recommendations:
  • Focus on water works projects for future development. This will require merchant backing, probably forming a publically-owned company.
  • Information transfer to MORGANA. Form secure data streams of timely local data on conditions and resources, but not privileged Project information.
  • Prepare to hold a reception during the roundup for VIPs and key groups we wish to influence, like the Marines, USAF, EmDees, and the Highway Patrol.

Route Log April 03, 2161

In the morning we finally got back down to the ambush site after setting up the relay station. When we got to the ambush site, the bodies were gone, dragged off. Maybe by Night Eyes, but probably not. On the way to Cajon, we passed a knocked-out Marine tank, something I’d never seen before. It looked like a lucky shot blew out the magazine, but it was a reminder that the Marines are not completely bulletproof.

Cajon was how I remembered it, with the CHP station and truck stop. I got a lot of flak for riding a horse, probably never live it down. The V-150 was there, and we got kitted up. Hannah and I were issued a lot of fantastic gear which smelled funny because, well, it all was so new! After talking to the CHP about leasing extra communications capacity with “Bo”, we picked up a Road Gypsy to help guide us through the Deadlands for a reasonable price. The CHP aren’t bad for Smokies, or “Badges”, and with their traditions, weapons and organization I think they could be a real help in eventually reconstructing the state of California.

Poole wasn’t so happy about letting people know about our capabilities (and certainly people shouldn’t know too much) but keeping everything secret was the biggest mistake CA-7 made overall. No one will know or care about the Morrow Project unless they think it will directly or even indirectly benefit them, and they can’t do that unless we tell them. Create a demand for our services, as it were.

The Road Gypsies are interesting folks. They are basically little cousins of the Gypsy Truckers, and they are indispensable as guides. Without them, trade in the Deadlands would be impossible. Most people like and trade with the Road Gypsies, but everyone knows that all Gypsy Truckers look out and protect them, and if anyone messes with a Road Gypsy they’re going to pay for it.

We took the western 15 route down from Cajon to Corona to avoid the Mexicans on 215, keep them off-balance. We were attacked en-route by probably some of gang that operates out of Fontana, at least three pursuit vehicles plus motorcycles lying in ambush. We quickly blew up all the four-wheelers and a bike, and scared off the bikes, although I was inside the V-150 and couldn’t see who really did what. We’re going to be a little better organized on the rear trip; it was something of a “Chinese fire drill” with everyone scrambling for a gunport or a place to shoot, and I found myself pulled out of my position and Rick there, instead. We took some damage from a rocket or recoilless rifle to the rear hatch, and Vod and Keshawn each took a bullet but they luckily had only minor wounds.

We made the Republic of Corona, which is kind of a neutral territory. We saw that the MARS team was enroute and reaching Cajon behind us. The toll was 4 gold crowns there and back, not too bad. In Corona we saw both Mexican and Marine vehicles and units. The Mexicans didn’t seem to know who we were. Down 90 through the hills towards UCI was relatively uneventful.

CA-1’s perimeter was pushed hard and had lost an Airscout vehicle, some kind of ultra-light or helicopter. Either way, no air recon information from them other than the Mexicans had artillery.

We arrived about 15 miles out from UCI at dusk, and found out the campus was surrounded. The plan was to help CA-1 and civilians break out to the north at 0301 hours. MORGANA was asking for access to our team vehicle net computer thing to coordinate information-gathering, something I strongly support at least if it’s safe.
